PAP SMEAR & COLPOSCOPY

The pap smear checks for changes in the cells of the cervix (neck of womb) at the top of vagina. It is a screening test to find early warning signs that cancer might develop in the future. Finding out you have an abnormal smear can be a tense and fearful time but it is important to remember, almost all abnormal pap smear results are not due to cancer.

SEE HOW WE CAN HELP YOU

If abnormal changes are found at your screening pap smear, We will investigate this further with a colposcopy and possibly a biopsy or ongoing monitoring with repeat pap smear.

A colposcopy is a procedure that allows us to have a magnified view of your cervix to check the extent and nature of any abnormality. It takes about 10-15minutes and is best scheduled at a time when you are not having your period. It is similar to having a Pap smear, as a speculum is used to help us visualise the cervix. The colposcopy works like a microscope to magnify the cervix. It does not touch or enter the body. We will then apply a solution to the cervix which helps to identify any abnormal areas. If any abnormal areas are found a small sample of tissue (biopsy) may be taken and sent to the laboratory for testing. The results of this will guide any further management.

After the procedure you may experience some discomfort, which will usually settle with simple pain relief such as Paracetamol or NSAIDs. You may also experience some “spotting” of old blood for a few hours afterwards. To reduce your risk of bleeding and infection you should avoid bath, swimming pool, sexual intercourse, tampons or vigorous exercise for 48 hours.
